Hydrotherapy is one of the key programmes offered at Patricia Avenue School. The long-awaited, new purpose-built Hydrotherapy swimming pool has quickly become a favourite activity for these determined young people.
Patricia Avenue School is a specialist school, that educates and develops children and young adults from 5-21 years old with an intellectual disability, from the greater Hamilton area. The school aims to have each child thrive and reach their full potential. This is done by a team of dedicated educationalists, and specialist therapists offering; speech, music, art, language occupational, physiotherapy, vision therapy, and psychologists under one roof.
Before the introduction of the on-campus hydrotherapy pool, students had to be transported to the local council pool, which not only became a whole morning or afternoon activity but for many students, a daunting and sometimes overwhelming proposition. With the new pool just meters from classrooms, students are eager to plunge into the warm comfort of the spa pool and/or participate in weekly therapy swimming groups.
Derived from the Greek words hydro (water) and therapia (healing), hydrotherapy harnesses the therapeutic properties of warm water to promote physical and psychological well-being. The water’s natural buoyancy allows bathers with limited mobility to move freely, and independently, without the risk of injury.
Students, Parents, and Staff have noticed a new air of confidence and quiet determination in the young Patrica Avenue Student bathers, after just a couple of weeks of regular swimming. We look forward to hearing about the remarkable progress these determined young people can achieve in their purpose-built Hydrotherapy swimming pool.
Hydrotherapy sessions allow bathers freedom of movement, with reduced body pain and joint impact, improve fitness and balance, and allow body-specific exercises to be completed at the bather's own pace. Water play decreases anxiety and mental stress, and most importantly water play is Fun. Fun equals smiles, irrespective of age, stage, and ability and Fun is the best health tonic of all.

Particia Avenue Schools Hydrotherapy Pool was a joint project with Mitchell Construction Ltd, completing the building works, and Coombes Aquatics Ltd was responsible for the specialist water services, ELBE membrane, pool tank finishing, and Heating.
